Child safety & AI transparency

Riley is an AI
Riley, the coach inside PracticAI, is an AI — not a human. She is built and directed by a real drum teacher, but her messages are generated by AI (Anthropic's Claude). We say this at onboarding, in the app's chat surfaces, and here, because nobody should ever be unsure about it.
Age policy
- Under 13: PracticAI is not available. The app asks every user's age band at first launch and stops there for under-13s. Schools and teachers interested in younger learners can contact us about the supervised schools programme: harry@mentoraai.io.
- 13–17: supported, with Minor Mode on by default (below). We ask 13–17s to check with a parent or guardian before using the app.
- 18+: full app.
We collect an age band only — never a date of birth. The band can't be switched off by the user and is never used for advertising or analytics.
Minor Mode (automatic for 13–17s)
- No marketing. 13–17 accounts are excluded from marketing emails and re-engagement notifications. They receive only functional messages (e.g. an account-deletion warning).
- Focused AI memory. For a minor, Riley's back-and-forth conversational notes are kept to the most recent 90 days. Practice logs — the lessons, tempos and progress that make the coaching work — are kept like any account, and can be cleared or deleted by the user at any time.
- Child-safety instructions. Riley's AI runs with an extra rule set for minors: stay a drum coach (never a confidant or friend role), keep all content age-appropriate, never give diet or body-image advice, and point any personal worries to a trusted adult — a parent, guardian, teacher or school counsellor.
- No social surface. PracticAI has no chat with other users, no sharing, no strangers — for anyone, of any age.
Our compliance posture
PracticAI follows Anthropic's guidelines for organisations serving minors (age screening, content safeguards, AI disclosure, and this public statement) and is designed against the UK ICO Children's Code: data minimisation, high-privacy defaults for minors, no nudge techniques, and transparency a teenager can actually read. A Data Protection Impact Assessment is maintained and available to schools and institutions on request.
